The decision of holding the Asia Cup 2022 in Sri Lanka will be taken at the end of the month amid the unrest political situation in the island nation over the resignation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa earlier this week.

The Asia Cup 2022 is scheduled to be played in the T20 format in Sri Lanka between August 27 and September 11.

Sri Lanka was named the hosts for the Asia Cup, which they were initially supposed to host in 2020 but the tournament was deferred due to the rising COVID-19 cases in the country.

However, the current situation is clouded by political turmoil as the country is witnessing violence on the streets. Hours after Rajapaksa resigned from the PM post, his supporters attacked the protesters prompting authorities to impose a nationwide curfew and deploy army troops in the capital – Colombo.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who is also the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), called Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Shammi Silva and CEO Ashley de Silva after the violence erupted in the island nation.
